BWHC supports the flood-affected older persons in Parshuram Upazila, Feni

With the financial support from the HelpAge International, the Bangladesh Women’s Health Coalition (BWHC) has launched a targeted humanitarian project titled “Reduction of Health Sufferings of Older People in Flood-Affected Areas of Feni District, Bangladesh.” The initiative focuses on Parshuram Upazila, where recent floods have severely impacted over 6,000 older individuals—many of whom suffer from chronic illnesses, limited mobility, and lack access to basic health services.

These older adults, often overlooked in disaster responses, have lost essential items such as assistive devices and clothing, while also facing disruptions in their access to life-sustaining medicines and health check-ups. It started on the 07 August 2025 and will continue till 05 October 2025.

The project aims to restore the health, mobility, and dignity of older people through a combination of home-based healthcare services and essential non-food item (NFI) distribution. Specifically, BWHC supports 1,000 vulnerable older individuals (600 women and 400 men) with health screenings, diagnosis, physiotherapy, necessary medications, and assistive products like walking sticks and wheelchairs. In addition, clothing and other NFIs are provided to those unable to afford replacements after the flood. These efforts directly respond to gaps identified in needs assessments conducted by Oxfam and UN Cluster partners, which highlighted the urgent need for age-inclusive humanitarian support.

By addressing both the medical and material needs of older people, the project seeks to reduce suffering, prevent further health deterioration, and promote dignity during recovery. The intervention not only fills a critical service gap in disaster response but also reinforces the importance of inclusive, home-based care models that consider the unique

vulnerabilities of the elderly in crisis-affected communities.

Planned Support:

  • Home-based health check-ups
  • Free medicines and diagnostics
  • Physiotherapy and mobility aids
  • Clothing and basic non-food items

The project directly addresses the urgent needs of older people and aims to restore their health, independence, and dignity.
